Festive opening of the sport-fishing district Klokot

On Saturday, 16th May, the sport-fishing district in Klokot near Bihać (north-western Bosnia) was re-opened under a new management. On the following day already, the fishermen could enjoy their hobby on that idyllic river. By taking over the responsibility of the administration, the company RIZ Krajina from Bihać has made a lot of effort in order to give the river a „face-lift“ and to comply the best to anglers' requirements.
This implied the complete cleaning of the river and its banks as well as the building of adequate infrastructure for fishing – paths, eaves, benches, rent-a-boat and parking lots. Besides, the company, which has been running a fish-farm and a spawning-ground for the autochtonous brown trout and grayling (with plans to spread to Danube salmon, too) since 2000, cares for the regular stocking of these species into Klokot while the immigrated rainbow-trout has been virtually eliminated.
The fishing district consists of two zones of which the first one, right next to the source, is reserved for fly-fishing while anglers may also use other techniques in the second zone.
For regular guests has been founded an own angling club which will be organising international angling competitions and further events for the members. On the long-term, its aim is the promotion of sport-fishing, especially in view of the younger generation, in the region, for which will be offered special angling classes.
River Klokot
The river with a length of 4.5 km emanates approx. 5 km from Bihać in north-western Bosnia. In-between the scenic Plješevica Mountains, the river flows with a constant temperature of 8-10°C through the homonymous village which just consists of a several private houses. However, the biggest part of Klokot lies in a completely unspoiled nature before joining River Una.
Klokot is a mountain river with the typical characteristics of a karst river. The banks are soft and earthy, the river ground is overgrown with water plants which, in turn, offer habitat for a huge number of endemic crayfish. The river banks are lined with poplars and willows. Thanks to numerous cataracts producing big quantities of oxygen, an ideal development of the young fish is guaranteed.
Perfect natural conditions
Only 2 hours from the Croatian capital Zagreb, the region in north-western Bosnia is industrially relatively under-developed and agriculture is used on an extensive level which have saved the pristine nature in this region.
The quality of the river water is steadily measured and the results are sent to the relevant department for water protection in Sarajevo. Thanks to the oxygen-rich mountain source right next to the river, the water is ideal for the autochthonous species grayling and brown trout. Besides that, the river accommodates larvae and nymphs of numerous different insects which serve the fish for food. The pebbly river ground offers ideal conditions for those species – such as grayling and brown trout – for their reproduction.
The health state of the fish stock is regularly checked by the agricultural faculty of Sarajevo.
River sections
The first part of Klokot (2210 m) is reserved for fly-fishing, for which can be withdrawn the following species per day:
- Grayling: from a length of 30 cm
- Pike: from 40 cm
- Hucho/Danube salmon: ab 70 cm
- Rainbow trout: without restriction and free of charge, as no autochthonous fish
For brown trout has to be applied the principle „catch & release“.
The remaining 2.4 km till the estuary to River Una will be opened for other techniques than fly-fishing. Before the re-opening of this part within the next few weeks, we’ll let you know about the exact regulations.
Close season for grayling is from January to the end of April and from October to the end of February for the brown trout.
On some parts of the river can be used boats which we offer for a daily price of 10 KM (5 EUR). During the next months will also be build a “fishermen’s house” with a restaurant and sanitary installations. But already you will find eaves for some rest and in case of rain. In case of interest, we offer also catering services.
